General Hate
Groups in this category peddle a combination of well-known hate and conspiracy theories, in addition to unique bigotries that are not easily categorized. Several of the groups seek to profit off their bigotry by selling hate materials from several different sectors of the white supremacist movement.
Top Takeaways
Groups listed under the General Hate category defy simple categorization. They embrace a broad range of bigotries, which can include male supremacy, antisemitism and anti-Black, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim views.
The largest group is the鈥Proud Boys, a 鈥淲estern chauvinist鈥 men鈥檚 group that espouses rabidly anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant beliefs, demonizes trans people and clings to archaic and misogynistic notions of gender. Established in New York City in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the Proud Boys were staunch supporters of Donald Trump throughout his presidency. The group has a long history of violence, and roughly members are believed to have participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The group鈥檚 top leaders were convicted of seditious conspiracy for their role in the insurrection.
Key Moments
In June 2022, Enrique Tarrio, who led the group when its members participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection, was indicted in federal court for seditious conspiracy alongside four other Proud Boys who participated in the attack. In early October 2022, North Carolina Proud Boys leader Jeremy Bertino pleaded guilty to those charges. In May 2023, Tarrio, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl were convicted of seditious conspiracy. Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison 鈥 the longest sentence of any of the participants. Attorneys for Nordean and Tarrio have stated an intent to appeal for shorter sentences, while the federal prosecutors have appealed for longer sentences.
While the fallout from the insurrection caused the Proud Boys to take a brief hiatus, the group has remobilized. Their activism throughout 2022 and 2023 largely consisted of unannounced protests, most of which targeted 人兽性交+ and reproductive justice events or facilities. They followed the campaigns led by the extreme, Trump wing of the GOP: As elected officials and media personalities targeted 人兽性交+ people through their propaganda and legislation, groups like the Proud Boys organized protests designed to intimidate 人兽性交+ people and their allies in their own communities. Many events were canceled in the interest of safety after being targeted by the Proud Boys.
While the Proud Boys remained mobilized throughout 2023, their activity declined. They participated in over 120 demonstrations in 2022 but appeared at just 44 in 2023. Some of the decline may be due to as it attempts to chart a path forward without national-level leadership, which was eliminated from the group鈥檚 organizational structure after its leaders were charged with seditious conspiracy.
What鈥檚 Ahead
As Republican politicians use鈥, the Proud Boys鈥 brand of authoritarian politics is shifting further into the political mainstream. While the group鈥檚 activity declined in 2023, the threat the group poses is likely to elevate during the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. They remained poised to participate in election-related activities, such as providing 鈥渟ecurity鈥 at campaign events.
