These incidents include only a fraction of the approximately 195,000 reported and unreported hate crimes that a 2011 Bureau of Justice Statistics report estimated occurred annually between 2003 and 2009. This listing carries a selection of incidents from the fourth quarter of 2012. Any additional listings can be found on the聽Intelligence Project鈥檚 website.

A local DJ who is also a gay activist was assaulted by two men outside a bar. Jermon Barnes, 22, and Ernie Barnes, 24, face aggravated assault charges.

Desi Marentes, 34, was sentenced to death for the 2006 shooting death of a black man, Eric Buckley. The murder was gang-related and Buckely was targeted because of his race.

A man allegedly yelled racial slurs, punched a restaurant manager and threatened him with a knife. Kenneth Underwood was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.

Wan Ryung Song, 46, was charged with four counts of making a bomb threat and one count of vandalism after he allegedly called in a phony bomb threat against a Jewish temple and a nearby police car and wrote anti-Semitic remarks and a swastika on a temple on Dec. 6.

Aaron Weich, 26, and Salvatore Bordessa, 32, were arrested on charges that included assault with a deadly weapon, two gang enhancements, terrorist threats, dissuading a witness and a hate crime for allegedly yelling 鈥渨hite pride鈥 and the name of a local gang with reported white supremacist beliefs before attacking two black men and stabbing one of them on Aug. 26.
Ventura 鈥 Dec. 12, 2012
Four people were arrested in connection with a Sept. 7 incident where several people were allegedly attacked at a campground by people wielding baseball bats and yelling racial slurs. Later the same night the same group of people allegedly attacked and yelled racial slurs at several Latino hunters in the area. Kirk Smets, 19, and Andrew Martin, Forrest Darrough and Mya Braschler, all 20, were charged with assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and violation of civil rights by force or fear. A fifth person, Ryan Vanausdell, 37, was arrested on Sept. 27 on several charges that included possession of firearms by a felon and possession of bullets containing an explosive agent.

Guy Pendleton Jr., 43, was convicted of assault as a hate crime and third-degree possession of a weapon for attacking a black man with a hammer while yelling racial slurs at the man and his Latino friend. Pendleton was sentenced to 15 years in prison plus five years鈥 post-release supervision for the assault charge and seven years in prison for the weapons charge, with the sentences to run concurrently.
