White Nationalist Academics to Gather This Weekend for H.L. Mencken Club Annual Meeting

When it formed , the founders of envisioned a simple forum for the 鈥渋ntellectual right鈥 to be filled with 鈥測oung thinkers and activists鈥 ready to tackle the tough issues confronting the country. In reality, though, the club was for the country鈥檚 most prominent white nationalists.

And this weekend, the Club is at it again, gathering to discuss topics ranging from the state of immigration in the United States, to the so-called and the traditional family.

Speakers at this year鈥檚 conference, which is being held at 鈥渁 hotel near Baltimore-Washington International Airport,鈥 according to the website, include , the white nationalist fired from the National Review for writing a piece for a separate publication suggesting that white and Asian parents should warn their children that black people pose a threat to their safety. He plans to give a speech with the puzzlingly bland title, 鈥淧olitics and Intelligence.鈥 William Regnery, who founded the racist journal and co-founded the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist think tank, is scheduled to give a presentation titled 鈥淭hrown Off the Bus.鈥

is also speaking this year. Baskerville is an associate professor of government at Patrick Henry College and a former research fellow at the Illinois-based Howard Center for Family, Religion, and Society. One of the Howard Center鈥檚 most prominent projects is its anti-LGBT World Congress of Families (WCF), which recently held a planning committee meeting in Moscow for its 2014 gathering there. The WCF has been extremely busy and supporting anti-LGBT laws abroad. Baskerville is the second person from Patrick Henry College to address the gathering. The first was Gene Veith, the college provost and literature professor who .

And there are many, many more, some obscure and some from mainstream academia, including:

  • Richard Spencer, executive director of the , whose mission statement says it aims "to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights.鈥 He will speak on 鈥淚n Defense of Decadence.鈥

  • , professor emeritus at Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y., who has appeared in the past at white nationalist conferences. He will speak on genetic decline, a topic fitting for his past involvement with groups consumed with eugenics and genetic engineering.

  • , a visiting assistant professor of English at SUNY-Oswego. Though he has many mainstream academic publications to his name, Bertonneau has also contributed to Alternative Right, another of Richard Spencer鈥檚 white nationalist venues, and The Occidental Quarterly.

  • Paul Gottfried (a club co-founder), a fixture on the paleoconservative and white nationalist right. The professor emeritus of humanities at Elizabethtown College 聽has also spoken at American Renaissance conferences.

  • Carl Horowitz, with the right-leaning National Legal and Policy Center. Horowitz is a former urban affairs policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation. He has also written several articles for the white nationalist .

  • , a Jewish astrophysicist whose racist book Understanding Human History focused on the alleged differences between various ethnic and racial groups. He will speak on 鈥淒ecadence and Democracy.鈥

Hart has been a regular at biennial conferences put on by American Renaissance and has a deep involvement in white nationalist circles. But this September, he published with Claire Parkinson, a NASA scientist with no history on the racist right and who has been involved for decades with the civil rights movement. The book, a benign collection of great thinkers and inventors in science and technology, was published by Washington Summit, the publishing arm of NPI. One of the back-cover blurb states that the book should be 鈥渨idely read and liked by high-school and college students.鈥

Hart鈥檚 background in white nationalist circles was a surprise to Parkinson, as was the revelation of Washington Summit鈥檚 affiliation. When contacted by Hatewatch, 聽Parkinson said she was shocked, replying that, 鈥淐ertainly if I had known then what I know now, I never would have agreed to write a book with Michael Hart or publish it with Washington Summit Publishers.鈥

Much of what The Mencken Club tries to do is legitimize racism under the glossy veneer of academia. Named after the longtime Baltimore Sun scribe, the club鈥檚 members admire European culture and the 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Neitzsche. It was Mencken鈥檚 own ideas on race that seem to be behind the name.

In 1930, as the reported earlier this year, Mencken called Jewish people 鈥渢he most unpleasant race every heard of鈥 and he wrote of the 鈥渘egro鈥 as a 鈥渓ow-caste man鈥 who will 鈥渞emain inert and inefficient until fifty generations of him have lived in civilization. And even then, the superior white race will be fifty generations ahead of him.鈥

Through the years, the group has drawn speakers including white nationalist luminaries such as and , founder of the ultraconservative . , founder of American Renaissance, has also addressed the group. So has , a former senior editor at Forbes magazine and founder of the white nationalist website .

Beyond this annual meeting, the group appears to do little else. All the same, its relevance on the white nationalist right lies in the sum total of its members and speakers, and its continued ability to draw academics from the mainstream.
