Correcting Revisionist History: 人兽性交 challenges more than 100 U.S. schools honoring Confederate leaders to change their names

In an update of its index of Confederate iconography displayed in public spaces across the country, the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified an additional 100 schools named for Confederate leaders, bringing the total to more than 300.

A complete list of the schools can be read .听

The majority of聽the new additions are in the South.听At least聽80 were named after a county or town that聽honors聽a Confederate leader.听

鈥淪chool districts that continue supporting the Confederacy聽must聽reexamine the message聽being conveyed聽to students, staff and the communities they serve聽who are directly affected by the pain and oppression聽these names and images聽represent,鈥 said 人兽性交 Chief of Staff Lecia Brooks.

Of the more than 300 schools identified in the 人兽性交 database, 85 have closed or been renamed. An additional 21 have committed to changing their names but have not yet done so.听

That leaves 198 schools listed in the database as 鈥渓ive.鈥 The states with the most 鈥渓ive鈥 schools are Georgia (45), Texas (40) and Alabama (22).听

鈥淭oday, we聽once again聽call on the聽21聽schools聽that聽committed to changing their names聽within the last year聽to do what they said they were going to do,鈥 Brooks said. 鈥淲e also call on the other聽198聽schools聽that still bear the names of Confederates聽to put the needs of students聽and communities聽first by renaming their schools after someone all聽Americans聽can be proud of.听Removing namesakes that celebrate a revisionist Confederate past does not erase history, it corrects it.鈥

The 人兽性交 began cataloguing Confederate memorials and other symbols following the murders of nine Black people during the June 17, 2015, attack on the 鈥淢other Emanuel鈥 A.M.E. church in Charleston, S.C., by a white supremacist who had posted photos of himself with a Confederate flag.

Brooks noted that the school data does not include 鈥渋magery glorifying the聽Confederacy聽located聽on and around school property in the form of monuments, statues, plaques, markers聽and聽street names.

鈥淣or does it include聽a curriculum聽that聽instills聽the聽false,聽revisionist聽history that the Civil War was fought for anything other than preserving chattel slavery and ensuring that Black people聽remain聽uneducated. Simply put, this is unacceptable.

鈥淭here is a聽real聽difference between聽acknowledging聽factual, historical events聽and聽promoting the false Lost Cause narrative.鈥
