MONTGOMERY,鈥疉L鈥�-鈥疶oday,鈥痑鈥痡ury鈥痜ound former police officer Kim Potter guilty of first and second-degree manslaughter鈥痠n the shooting death of Daunte Wright. The following is a statement from鈥疢argaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center (人兽性交).鈥����

鈥淭he murder of Daunte Wright by鈥痑鈥痺hite鈥痮fficer鈥痺ho鈥痵wore鈥痶o protect and鈥痵erve鈥痟er community鈥痠s鈥痽et another example of鈥痸iolent police interactions鈥痺ith鈥疊lack鈥痗itizens.鈥疉fter being pulled over for a minor traffic infraction鈥痠n Minneapolis 鈥� just鈥�11 miles鈥痑way鈥痜rom where George Floyd succumbed at the knee of another officer 鈥� Daunte Wright was鈥痵hot and killed by鈥痜ormer police officer Kim Potter.鈥�

听鈥淎nd while justice was served in鈥疍aunte Wright鈥檚鈥痗ase, we must not forget about the countless other鈥疊lack and brown people who have been shot or killed鈥痓y police officers in the U.S., often without the benefit of video evidence or sympathetic juries such as those in Kim Potter鈥檚 trial. In the United States, Black men are about 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than are white men. Due to the history of human rights violations by law enforcement who frequently use force 鈥揺specially lethal force 鈥揳gainst individuals of color, we must undertake significant reforms to stop seeing these tragedies unfold.听

鈥淥ur criminal and legal systems are long overdue for a transformation to root out鈥痶he鈥痠nherent鈥痳acism that has long plagued our country. We challenge lawmakers at鈥痓oth鈥痶he鈥痜ederal鈥痑nd state鈥痩evels to hold鈥痮fficers accountable for police violence.
