ATLANTA 鈥撀�The Southern Poverty Law Center (人兽性交) issued the following statement about the death of Salvador Vargas, a 61-year-old Mexican man in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. His death marks the ninth death at the facility since 2017.

The Stewart Detention Center is a privately operated immigration prison run by CoreCivic. Numerous civil rights and civil liberties complaints, and other reports, have repeatedly denounced inadequate, negligent and abusive medical care at the facility. These reports also address the facility鈥檚 forced labor practices, failure to provide COVID-19 protections, physical violence against detained people, punitive use of solitary confinement and lack of protections from sexual assault.

The following statement is from聽Efr茅n C. Olivares, deputy legal director of the 人兽性交鈥檚聽Immigrant Justice Project:听

鈥淲e are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Mr. Vargas, yet another preventable loss of life in ICE custody. Our hearts go out to his family and the families of all immigrants in ICE detention.

鈥淢r. Vargas鈥� tragic death is a painful reminder of our immigration detention鈥檚 systemic failures. We are heartbroken, but not surprised: ICE has repeatedly shown that it cannot keep people in its custody safe. Black and Brown migrants鈥� lives continue to be extinguished in a discriminatory system that denies or delays urgent medical care. The detention system disregards people鈥檚 humanity, breeds abuse and medical neglect, and leads to tragedies like this.

鈥淚mmigrant detention furthers no sensible public policy, and it must end. We urge President Biden to keep his administration鈥檚 promises to ensure a just, humane and welcoming immigration system and decrease the use of detention before another life is inevitably lost.鈥澛�

Pronunciamiento del 人兽性交 sobre la muerte de un migrante en el Centro de Detenci贸n Stewart

ATLANTA 鈥� El Centro Legal para la Pobreza del Sur (Southern Poverty Law Center. 人兽性交) emiti贸 el siguiente comunicado sobre la muerte de Salvador Vargas, un mexicano de 61 a帽os que falleci贸 bajo custodia del Servicio de Inmigraci贸n y Control de Aduanas de los Estados Unidos (ICE) en el Centro de Detenci贸n Stewart en Lumpkin, Georgia. Su muerte marca la novena muerte en la instalaci贸n desde 2017.

El Centro de Detenci贸n de Stewart es un centro de detenci贸n migratoria privado administrado por CoreCivic. Numerosas quejas de derechos civiles y libertades civiles, as铆 como otros informes, han denunciado repetidamente la falta de atenci贸n m茅dica adecuada, negligencia y abusos en el centro. Los informes tambi茅n abordan las pr谩cticas de trabajos forzados en el centro, falta de protecci贸n efectiva contra el COVID-19, violencia f铆sica contra las personas detenidas, el uso punitivo del confinamiento solitario y la falta de protecci贸n contra agresiones sexuales.

"La muerte del Sr. Vargas es un doloroso recordatorio de las fallas sist茅micas de nuestro sistema de detenci贸n migratoria. Estamos desconsolados, pero no sorprendidos: ICE ha demostrado una y otra vez ser incapaz de mantener con bien a las personas que encarcela. Las vidas de los migrantes de color son extinguidas en un sistema discriminatorio que niega y retrasa la atenci贸n m茅dica. La detenci贸n migratoria viola la humanidad de las personas, genera abusos y negligencia m茅dica y lleva a tragedias como 茅sta.

鈥淟a detenci贸n migratoria no se justifica con ninguna pol铆tica p煤blica sensata y debe terminar. Instamos al presidente Biden a que cumpla las promesas de su gobierno de crear un sistema de inmigraci贸n justo, humano y acogedor y a disminuir el uso de la detenci贸n migratoria antes de que, inevitablemente, se pierda otra vida鈥�.
