ALAMO, Texas 鈥� In response to the president鈥檚 planned visit to the border on Tuesday, Efr茅n Olivares, deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center鈥檚 Immigrant Justice Project, released the following statement.
鈥淔or years, communities on the border have resisted this administration鈥檚 bigoted agenda. It鈥檚 these communities, from San Diego to Brownsville, who have been subjected to unconscionable violence inflamed by the president鈥檚 anti-immigrant rhetoric and xenophobic policies. 聽
鈥淩ather than addressing his own culpability in the insurrection at our nation's Capitol last week, Trump is seeking to divert attention by heading to the symbolic seat of his racist immigration agenda.聽
鈥淭he violence Trump incited last week, and the violence his anti-immigrant policies cause stem from the alarming mainstreaming of white nationalist ideology that our country must reckon with and fight to uproot.聽
鈥淭he president鈥檚 planned trip to the border will only further the harm and beget more violence. It must be cancelled.鈥�
