人兽性交 Urges Policymakers to Prevent Hate-Fueled Crimes During Hate Crimes Awareness Month

Latest FBI report shows significant increases in anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim crimes

MONTGOMERY, Ala. 鈥 Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (人兽性交) announces the start of Hate Crimes Awareness Month, the monthlong campaign highlighting the epidemic of hate-fueled crimes, their survivors and the advocacy to prevent these senseless crimes. The 人兽性交 will lead a national conversation, October 1-October 31, through a multi-media campaign urging action from the public, advocates and policymakers in the nation鈥檚 capital and across the Deep South.聽

鈥淓very person in this country deserves to feel safe in their community,鈥 said Margaret Huang, president and CEO, Southern Poverty Law Center. 鈥淯prooting the hate that leads to bias-motivated violence and criminal activity requires addressing prejudice before it influences the minds of susceptible people.鈥

Following the recent release of the FBI 2023 Hate Crime Statistics Act report showing a continued increase of hate-rated crimes, 人兽性交 is elevating four policy recommendations to prevent and combat hate crimes during its Hate Crimes Awareness Month campaign:

  • Mandate hate crime reporting.鈥The Improving Reporting to Prevent Hate Act (HR 7648) 鈥 would鈥痗ondition鈥痜ederal funding for law enforcement agencies鈥痵erving large communities鈥痮n credible reporting of hate crimes.鈥疶he bill is鈥痯ending before鈥疌ongress.聽
  • Provide money for prevention initiatives.鈥疐ederal agencies鈥 especially the Justice Department and the Department of Education 鈥撯痵hould鈥痚stablish and fund programs to build community resiliency against hate and empower adults to help steer young people away from violent extremism.鈥
  • Expand interagency coordination against hate.鈥疌ongress should act to institutionalize President Biden鈥檚 United We Stand Summit goal to establish an interagency initiative on hate crimes.鈥
  • Ban white supremacy from federal law enforcement.鈥疌ongress should pass legislation to鈥痯rohibit鈥痟iring and retaining law enforcement officials who actively promote white supremacist鈥痓eliefs鈥痮r engage in discriminatory policing.聽

鈥淲hile we have made progress engaging law enforcement agencies on data collection and reporting, much more can be done to protect vulnerable communities,鈥 said Huang. 鈥淲e will continue to push our leaders to invest in strategies that prevent the spread of hate and result in greater accountability and justice for those who have been targeted.鈥

For more than 50 years, the 人兽性交 has been at the forefront of combating hate and extremism. Founded in 1971, the organization has won numerous landmark legal victories on behalf of the people and communities in the Deep South and exposed the activities of far-right hate and extremist groups through the 人兽性交 Intelligence Project, Hate Map and Hatewatch blog.
